Understanding Lenses

"D" Lenses = Distance (Helps in exposure metering)

"G" Lenses = No aperture ring, cheaper plastic build

"Ai" Lenses = Chrome Ring, 7 Blades More accurate (longer) Focus Throw

"Ai-S" Lenses = Aluminum Ring, 9 Blades, nine blades produces better bokeh, (shorter Focus Throw/less accurate throw)

"DC" Defocus Control. Better bokeh without softening the foreground subject

Zooms - There are two basic types

Two Touch: Zoom Ring and Focus Ring

Push and Pull: Slides in and out like a trombone (more susceptible to dust)

Blades - The center of the lens blades should be circular, not polygonal

Glass- The thinner the better (ie. Gauss or the even better Double Gauss)

Multi-Coating- Reduces lens flare and ghosting/ Increases light transmission
